Motion Design
Client:

Personal Project

Objective:

This was one of my first mini-projects where I got to practice the process of creating an animated video. I sketched the storyboards, illustrated the backgrounds, and did all the hand-drawn animation.

Tools:

Sketching, Clip Studio Paint, Adobe After Effect, Adobe Premiere Pro

Deliverables:

30 - 45 sec animation

Early Concept Work

This video took a couple of tries to get right. I started with a completely different style and got as far as the animatic phase when I decided to go back to the drawing board. I wanted to understand all the phases of the animation process and for me, the best practice was to start from square one.

Background Design

I was inspired by the background design of Steven Universe. For the backgrounds, I wanted to replicate a hand-drawn/painted feel with a whole lot of texture and brushwork.

I wanted the backgrounds to reflect the difference between the Knight’s imagination and reality. For most of the animation, the color palette of the backgrounds is more saturated with greater contrast while the final background’s color palette is a bit more muted.

Animation Process

I sketched the initial storyboards in my sketchbook and after some refinement, I finalized them in Photoshop. From there I created the animatic in the Clip Studio Paint and added scratch sound effects in Premiere Pro.

The final hand-drawn animation was completed in Clip Studio Paint and then I used After Effects for the final composite and Premiere Pro to smooth out the sound design.
