Harmony Chea
I worked with Guam-based R&B artist, Harmony Chea, to develop three animated videos that played in between her sets during her concert titled “Guarded: Phases of the Moon”.
Harmony wanted the goal of this project to be a visual representation that expressed her journey as a local artist. She wanted to see the main character (herself) in a “hero’s journey” story.
Sketchbook, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere Pro, Clip Studio Paint
Three 1 minute animated video
One 30 seconds teaser
Together Harmony and I worked to create a story that reflected the “hero’s journey” she had in mind. In our concept development phase consultation, Harmony expressed she wanted the style to feel reflective, abstract, and dramatic.
To achieve this, I kept the character design simple and focused more on compositions that contrasted Harmony’s character against a greater, more mysterious world.
The color palette consisted of a whole bunch of purples and pinks. This was to align with the branding of the concert but in the context of the story, I played with the vibrancy of the color palette to match the ups and downs of the hero’s journey.
For this project, I created the finalized storyboard in Photoshop and developed the animatic in After Effects. After final approval, I developed the illustrations in Photoshop and did the animation in After Effects. There are a few elements of hand-drawn animations sprinkled in the final product that I created with the help of Clip Studio Paint. The final mix was completed in Premiere Pro.
